How to Create Several Bar Charts Using Small Multiples

This article describes how to create several bar charts using small multiples (panel charts).

Starting with an existing table like this...

We will end up with multiple small bar charts like this:

Requirements

  • A table with at least two columns and at least one row.

Method - via the visualization menu

  1. From the toolbar, select Visualization > Bar > Small Multiples Bar.
  2. Click on the page to place the visualization.
  3. Under Inputs > DATA SOURCE > Output in 'Pages' select the table that you want to base the chart on. Alternatively, in Inputs > DATA SOURCE > Variables in 'Data', select that data that you would like to be in the rows.
  4. OPTIONAL: If using Variables in 'Data' in Step 3, select the secondary variable to use as your cluster in Inputs > DATA SOURCE > Groups.
  5. OPTIONAL: Under Chart > APPEARANCE change the value in Number of rows of panels to 1 (this will ensure the three charts end up next to each other. Setting this to 2 or higher would show the charts one above the other).
  6. OPTIONAL: Under Chart make additional adjustments to change the appearance of the visualization.
  7. Click Calculate and/or ensure that Automatic is checked.

Method 2 - using an existing table

  1. Select the table.
  2. From the object inspector, go to Visualization > Bar > Small Multiples Bar.
  3. OPTIONAL: Under Chart > APPEARANCE change the value in Number of rows of panels to 1 (this will ensure the three charts end up next to each other. Setting this to 2 or higher would show the charts one above the other).
  4. OPTIONAL: Under Chart make additional adjustments to change the appearance of the visualization.
  5. Click Calculate and/or ensure that Automatic is checked.

Note

Important information about editing captions: 

Visualization caption edits may not be retained when a visualization with a nested table is switched back to table. Normally, this only occurs when you double-click the caption and edit the text directly. As a workaround, we recommend using Properties > CAPTION > Edit caption to edit your captions.
