How to Create Several Column Charts Using Small Multiples

This article describes how to create several column charts using small multiples (panel charts), starting with an existing table like this:

We will end up with several small column charts like this:

Requirements

• A table with at least two columns and at least one row.

Method - Via the visualization menu

1. From the toolbar, select Visualization > Column > Small Multiples Column.
2. Click on the page to place the visualization.
3. In the object insepctor , under Data > Data Source > Data, select the table that you want to base the chart on. Alternatively, in Data > Data Source > Variables, select the data that you would like to be in the rows. There are some caveats if you are using variables as the input.
4. OPTIONAL: If using Variables in Step 3, select the secondary variable to use as your cluster in Data > Data Source > Groups.
5. OPTIONAL: Under Chart > Appearance, change the value in Number of rows of panels to 1 (this will ensure the three charts end up next to each other. Setting this to 2 or higher would show the charts one above the other).
6. OPTIONAL: Under Chart, make additional adjustments to change the appearance of the visualization.
7. Click Calculate and/or ensure that Calculate automatically is checked.

Method 2 - Using an existing table

1. Select the table.
2. From the object inspector , go to Visualization > Column > Small Multiples Column.
3. OPTIONAL: Under Chart > Appearance, change the value in Number of rows of panels to 1 (this will ensure the three charts end up next to each other. Setting this to 2 or higher would show the charts one above the other).
4. OPTIONAL: Under Chart, make additional adjustments to change the appearance of the visualization.
5. Click Calculate and/or ensure that Calculate automatically is checked.

Note

Important information about editing captions: 

Visualization caption edits may not be retained when a visualization with a nested table is switched back to a table. Normally, this only occurs when you double-click the caption and edit the text directly. As a workaround, we recommend using Appearance > Caption > Edit caption to edit your captions.
