How to Add Spans, Significance, Multiple Statistics and Custom Highlighting to a Table with Custom Formatting

This article includes a customized template of Table with Custom Formatting (originally from Visualization > Specialty Tables), which can additionally show spans, significance, multiple statistics, and colors via applied rules.

Requirements

• A Displayr document.
• A standard table or R table that references a standard table. The significance and highlighting functionality only works when based on a table that still includes all the original table attributes that are stored in the background. The rule of thumb is that if significance results and a highlighting Rule display on a table, when you apply the template, it will keep this behavior. A combined R table, on the other hand, will lose these attributes, and neither significance nor highlighting will work on this table prior to applying the template.
• You wish to use Table with Custom Formatting and require significance testing and/or custom coloring.

Method

Saving the template to your Displayr Cloud Drive

By saving the template to your cloud drive, it will then be available to use in any document in your account.

1. Download the template file from here.
2. From your account, you can access the cloud drive at the top right of the page via your Initials icon > Displayr Cloud Drive.
3. Select the appropriate location and press + Upload.
4. Select the downloaded template file and press Upload.

Applying your template to a table

You can apply this template to any table that does not already have either the template or the built-in Table with Custom Formatting option applied.

1. Right-click your table > Apply Template.
2. Search for the previously saved template in the appropriate folder and select it.
3. Press Apply.

Re-saving your template

If you wish to change the default settings of the template with those that you use most often, you can save it back to the cloud drive.

1. Make the changes you want to save as default.
2. Right-click your custom formatted table > Save as Template.
3. Select the appropriate name and location.
4. Press Save.

Options

General

The general settings for the Table with Custom Formatting still apply. The following are additional options.

Spans

Column Span and Row Span groups are included with the same formatting options as the Column Header and Row Header groups.

When Show column spans or Show row spans is selected, tables which include spans will display the top span level as the span label, and the column or row header will store the original column or row label. Otherwise, column and row headers will include span labels as a prefix separated by a dash.

Significance Testing

Under Chart, there is a group called Significance, which lets you include the significance results from the source table.

1. Show significance

Font colors – Show significant cells by highlighting the font based on the color picker selections.

Arrows – Show significant cells by including a highlighted arrow based on the color picker selections.

Arrows and Font colors – Show significant cells by highlighting the font and including a highlighted arrow based on the color picker selections.

Cell color – Show significant cells by highlighting the background color based on the color picker selections.

2. Color pickers

Higher – The color of significantly higher results.

Lower – The color of significantly lower results.

3. Significance Icon (for Arrows and Arrows and Font colors only)

Default Arrow – Use the built-in arrows.

Custom Arrow – Use the arrow icons from Font Awesome.

Custom Triangle – Use the caret icons from Font Awesome.

Icon font size – Set the pixel size of the custom arrows.

Highlighting Cells and Font

1. Applying Color-based Rules

Select any color-based rule via Properties > Data > Rules > + > Highlight, Top/Bottom, Color Scales, or Other Color, and it will retain the highlighting in the custom formatted table.

For example, selecting Highlight > Color Scales > Custom will produce the table at the beginning of this article.

Note:

• Any table cells that are not highlighted by a rule will revert to the color selected under Chart > Cells > Fill color.
• When Show significance is not set to No, these color settings will take precedence over any highlighting made by a rule.
• Only colors applied by a rule will be maintained. Manual cell formatting changes to the source table are ignored.
• Under Chart > Font, tick Switch font color with background color to instead apply the cell coloring from the rule to the cell font colors. If no rule has modified the source table's cell colors, this option will set the font from Chart > Cells > Fill color.

2. Column Header, Row Header, Column Span, and Row Span groups

Additional color options include:

Custom fill palette - Enter the hex values for the row or column header/span fill color separated by a comma. If fewer values are entered than the number of headers or spans, the Fill color setting will be used for the others.

Repeat fill colors - Tick this option if you wish to enter hex values that repeat fill color for all headers or spans (e.g., setting two colors will be applied in alternating fashion).

Custom font palette -  Enter the hex values for the row or column header/span font color separated by a comma. If fewer values are entered than the number of headers or spans, the Font color setting will be used for the others.

Repeat font colors - Tick this option if you wish to enter hex values that repeat font color for all headers or spans (e.g., setting two colors will be applied in alternating fashion).

Additional Column Span only option includes:

Corner span label - Enter the label of the corner span.

3. Cells

Additional color options include:

Custom fill palette (R output) - Select a pasted table or R calculation containing hex values to set cell fill color and overwrite any existing color settings.

Custom font palette (R output) - Select a pasted table or R calculation containing hex values to set cell font color and overwrite any existing color settings.

Statistics

1. Cells

Additional options within the Cells group include:

Show cells - Untick this option to show no statistics. Ticking Show column headers or Show row headers will instead display only the column or row headers.

Show multiple cell statistics - Display multiple cell statistics as one row per statistic, grouped within row spans for each original row.

Show below/right statistics - Include Below and Right marginal statistics in your table.

Position - Select Bottom and right of table or Top and left of table for the placement of the Below and Right statistics.

Rows to ignore prefix - Enter indices of rows, separated by a comma, where you would like the specified prefix to be excluded.

Columns to ignore prefix - Enter indices of columns, separated by a comma, where you would like the specified prefix to be excluded.

Rows to ignore suffix - Enter indices of rows, separated by a comma, where you would like the specified suffix to be excluded.

Columns to ignore suffix - Enter indices of columns, separated by a comma, where you would like the specified suffix to be excluded.

2. Cell Values

Additional options within the Cell Values group include:

Decimal places (Percentages) - Set decimal places for any statistic which includes % in its name.

Decimal places (Sample sizes) - Set decimal places for any statistic which uses a Q or Displayr naming convention for sample size statistics or includes a variation of Population, Base, Count, or Sample Size in its name.

Decimal places (Other statistics) - Set decimal places for any statistic not included in the above options, typically decimal values.

Missing data symbol - Replace missing data with specified character(s).

Note:

• Data > Data Manipulation > Switch rows and columns has been removed, as Cell Values > Swap rows and columns also performs this task.
