A crosstab is created to break out data from a variable set by the groups of data from another. To create a crosstab, select a second Variable Set in the Data Sources pane and drag it onto the Columns field in a Summary Table. The gif below shows how to cross the Age Summary table by Gender.
You can also create many crosstabs automatically via an automation, see How to Create Lots of Crosstabs.
Requirements
A data set containing the variables from which you want to create the crosstab.
Method - from the Data Sources tree
The easiest and fastest way to create a crosstab is using drag and drop.
- Select the variable you would like to place in the rows from the Data Sources tree and drag it onto a page to create a summary table.
- Select the variable that you would like to place in the column from the Data Sources tree, drag it over to the table that was created in Step 1, and place it in the Columns field. Alternatively, you can drag it into the Data > Data Source > Columns field of the object inspector.
- OPTIONAL: If you would like to quickly switch the rows and columns, click Switch rows and columns.
Tip: It is often useful to show the count of observations in each cell of the table by selecting Data > Statistics > Cells > Count from the object inspector.
Method - from the Table menu
- From the toolbar or the right click menu in the Report pane, click Table
> Table from Dataset.
- From the object inspector, select the data you want to show in the rows of the table from the Data > Data Source > Rows dropdown box.
- Select the data you want to show in the columns of the table from the Data > Data Source > Columns dropdown box.
Tip: It is often useful to show the count of observations in each cell of the table by selecting Data > Statistics > Cells > Count from the object inspector.
Manipulating crosstabs and controlling their appearance
The appearance of a table is governed by:
- The properties of the Variable Set:
- The selections in the Data section of the Object Inspector:
- The data.
- The statistics.
- Filter(s) (see How to Apply a Filter).
- Weight (see Weights in Displayr).
- Appearance.
