Displayr can export charts and tables to Google Slides as native Google objects you can edit directly. The export creates a deck in your Google Drive, plus a Google Sheet that holds the chart and table data.
This article describes how to go from a Displayr document...
...to Google Slides.
NOTE: Some exported slides will not match Displayr one-to-one. The Google Slides and Google Sheets APIs have no setting for some Displayr chart options and will show the Google default instead. See Caveats and Limitations When Exporting From Displayr to Google Slides for more information.
This article is broken into the following sections:
- Method
- Export as editable Google Slides
- Export visualization(s) as an image (to match what is seen in Displayr)
- Update existing Google Slides
- Technical Information
- Canceling the export
Requirements
- A Displayr document with at least one output to export.
- A Google account.
Method
- Select the page(s)/standalone output(s) to export in the Report tree.
- Go to Share > Export Report > Google Slides.
- Update Choose which pages/outputs to export to Export Selected if you want to export only the selected items. Otherwise, leave it set to Export All to export all items in the Report tree.
- If this is the first time you are exporting to Google Slides from Displayr, click Connect Google account and follow the prompts to allow Displayr to connect to your Google account.
- Click Export.
- When the export finishes, a report dialog links to the deck and its associated Google Sheet. It also lists any warnings about the export.
See Caveats and Limitations When Exporting From Displayr to Google Slides if some slides don't appear as expected.
If you want to disconnect your Google account from Displayr, go to Share > Export Report > Google Slides and click Google account > Disconnect.
Export as editable Google Slides
By default, visualizations with matching Google Slides chart types will be exported as editable visualizations to Google Slides. To ensure this, you can check the settings:
- Select the visualization(s) on a page or in the Report tree.
- From Properties
, update Appearance > Google Slides Export > Format to Native.
- Update Export as to Match Displayr or another chart type.
Tables will always export as editable tables.
See Caveats and Limitations When Exporting From Displayr to Google Slides when exporting from Displayr to Google Slides as editable Google Slides.
Export visualization(s) as an image (to match what is seen in Displayr)
To export visualizations as an image, i.e., WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) to Google Slides, you can:
- Select the visualization(s) on a page or in the Report tree.
- From Properties
, update Appearance > Google Slides Export > Format to Image.
Tables will always export as editable tables.
Update existing Google Slides
Exporting the same document using the steps above overwrites the Google Slides from an earlier export. The earlier export stays available in the Google Slides version history.
Technical Information
- The slides go into a folder named after the document, inside a Displayr folder at the top of your Google Drive. Both files (Google Slides and the Google Sheet) are named after the document.
- Charts become native charts built in the Google Sheet, with one tab per chart. Each slide chart stays linked to its tab, so a reader can refresh the chart from the sheet inside Google Slides.
- Chart colors, fonts, axes, labels, and legends follow the Displayr settings where Google charts have a matching setting.
- Tables become native Google Slides tables. To keep the export fast, a table with more than 400 cells, or more than 75 rows or columns, is cut to its first 20 rows and 20 columns. The report warns you when a table is cut in the exporting dialog.
- Text boxes become native Google Slides text, with bullets, links, spacing, vertical alignment, and shrink-to-fit kept.
- Shapes, lines, and arrows become native Google Slides shapes, so you can edit them.
- Items with no native Google equivalent export as pictures. A chart whose export setting was updated away from a chart also exports as a picture.
- Page master items appear on every slide that uses that layout.
- An item that fails to export is left out and named in the export dialog warnings. The rest of the deck still exports. If the whole export fails, Displayr deletes the partial deck and sheet.
Canceling the export
Sometimes you may need to cancel your export. Many times the export will be finished by the time you realize, but for larger and more complex reports, you can cancel the export by clicking Cancel on the exporting dialog.
