Questions about using AI in Displayr
How do I use AI in Displayr?
AI in Displayr can be accessed in a variety of ways, depending on the actions you'd like to use AI for.
- To tidy and clean your data, use the Data Preparation Agent.
- To create an initial report from your data using AI, you will use the Research Agent feature.
- Have a conversation with the built-in Chat, which will give you prompts for the steps to create a report from start to finish and answer any questions you have about how to do things in Displayr.
- If you'd like to use Displayr AI for text categorization, see How to Classify Text Data.
- If you're looking to tidy labels when combining variables, this will happen automatically if you have Displayr AI enabled.
- If you want to create stand-alone AI outputs and AI-generated variables using prompts, see Using Customizable Displayr AI Features.
Can AI analyze my data?
Yes, AI can help you analyze your text data (see categorizing text data and sentiment analyses as examples) as well as do general analysis. There are multiple features that can analyze data using AI:
- Research Agent - this creates a report from your data using normal Displayr tables, charts, and other analyses, and also includes insights uncovered after the AI interprets the outputs. Since the outputs created by Research Agent are standard Displayr outputs, the calculations done on the data are exact.
- Chat - use the prompts to guide you through creating tables, and then add commentary to each page.
-
Custom AI Calculation - This feature is very flexible and can be used in many ways. See Using Customizable Displayr AI Features for options and details. It will create a single output in the report using AI to create an output based on your prompt and input, which can be specific variables and outputs already created in the Report tree or on a page. However, as AI models do not actually execute calculations, results must be carefully scrutinized, and they are not reliable for data calculations that need to be very precise or accurate, or for reporting (use the Research Agent for this).
As an example, I asked the AI which attributes from my multi-select question I can remove based on the results of a Principal Component Analysis I created in Displayr (instead of having the AI create the PCA as well):
Can AI interpret or summarize my data?
The Research Agent can create and interpret outputs using variables, pages, and outputs, including visualizations and advanced analysis models, in your data set. You can access this by selecting the item(s) and then right-clicking and selecting Add Commentary. You can modify your prompt to get more exact insights on the selected item(s) or reuse the context you provided earlier to the Research Agent. This will give you a text interpretation of the selected item(s). Additionally, you can use the Auto-Updating Interpretation, available via right-click, to automatically update the text interpretations of outputs if their data changes, like when a data set is updated or if the referenced item has interactive filtering using controls.
When following the "happy path" while using Chat, you can use the Add commentary prompt to add summaries of each of the outputs created by the agent.
You can also quickly summarize or interpret specific elements within your document, such as a table or regression, without the context of the Research Agent as above, using the Calculation > Custom AI function. For example, I have a crosstab that shows different age groups' interest in visiting a list of countries:
The table above is a bit large, and it can be hard to pull out quick insights. I can use the Custom AI tool and use the crosstab as the input and customize the prompt to ask for a summary in 100 words or less:
Remember that optimizing your prompts will get you better and more specific results. See Getting Started with AI Prompting in Displayr for tips.
Can AI create a report for me?
You can use the Research Agent to create an initial report and pull out insights from the data. You provide the data and guidance on what questions and information you want covered in the report, and the Research Agent will automatically analyze the data and create a report for your review. You can then check the results and update as necessary. As you are updating outputs, use the Add Commentary and Auto-Updating Interpretation features to quickly update the insights instead of having to start from scratch.
Follow the Chat's "happy path" to create a report for you based on your research objectives, population definition, and variables of your choosing. Chat will help you clean and tidy your data, create tables, add commentary, hide uninteresting data, and turn your tables into visualizations. From there, you can share your report via an online dashboard or export it.
Can AI interpret a table that contains significant differences (e.g., arrows and font colors)?
If you have turned on arrows and font colors or compare columns on a table, the Calculation > Custom AI tool will include significant differences in the AI-generated interpretation. The example above includes the significant differences in the interpreted summary.
Can I use visualization templates with the Research Agent?
Yes, you can use visualization templates that are saved in your Displayr Cloud Drive when running the Research Agent. The Research Agent has 10 alternative ways of displaying the data, based on the properties of the data. The 10 defaults are shown below. To change any of these, create a visualization as per your requirements and save it as a template, giving it the names as shown below (e.g., to replace the pie chart with something else, create a visualization and save it as Research Agent Template Six or Fewer Mutually Exclusive Categories).
Can I use AI to generate images?
No, you cannot use AI to generate images within Displayr. However, you can generate an image in the AI model of your choosing outside of Displayr and paste it into your document. See How to Copy and Paste an Image and How to Add an Image to Your Document.
Can AI automate data cleaning and preprocessing?
Yes, you can use AI in Displayr to clean and tidy your data in a few ways:
- Clean and tidy your data set - Use the Data Preparation Agent to create restructured variables, split variable sets that have been incorrectly combined, combine variables that aren't already grouped together as a variable set, create better variable names, etc. This step can also be part of your flow with Chat.
- Identify poor quality text variables and identify inconsistent data in your data set - See Using Customizable Displayr AI Features - AI-Generated variables for more information and examples. There is also a step to flag poor quality text as part of the Data Preparation Agent.
- Translate text - See Using Customizable Displayr AI Features - AI-Generated variables for more information and examples.
Can AI help find patterns or trends?
Yes, in general, AI models are specifically trained to pick up on patterns. To have AI create analyses based on variables you are interested in and find patterns or trends in the data (i.e., insights), you can use the Research Agent or Chat feature. These agents can review your entire data set or specific outputs/variables to look for trends.
You can create a Calculation > Custom AI output and prompt it to summarize patterns and trends in selected items. For example, you can select a text variable and create a prompt to read all text responses and return a summary of the top 3 themes in the responses.
How accurate is AI in making predictions from data?
Results from AI features within Displayr may contain material inaccuracies and may not reflect correct, current, or complete information. Do not rely on or encourage others to rely on any results without independently evaluating their accuracy and appropriateness of use, including by using human review. Displayr makes no representations or warranties and provides no guarantees regarding the accuracy of results.
How can AI be used to categorize open-ended text responses?
There are two different ways that you can use AI in Displayr to categorize open-ended responses.
- If you want more control over AI-generated themes and how text responses are assigned to themes, see How to Classify Text Data.
- If you want a quick and dirty categorization, select a text variable in the Data Sources tree, then click + > Custom Code > AI > Text. From there, you can edit and refine the Prompt to help create categories. If you use this method, you will not be able to reassign text responses to different categories, reuse the code frame, or update your data set and get the same results.
- In the Data Preparation Agent, you can select a step to identify themes in unstructured text data and classify text data into the themes. See How to Automatically Check and Prepare Your Data with Data Preparation Agent for details.
Can I extract tables or statistical analysis into an R or JSON file to use in a large language model?
This is currently not supported.
