Outputs (i.e. visualizations, tables, Calculations, and other analyses) are organized in a tree structure in the Report pane of a Document. Displayr allows outputs to be in the document in two ways:
- Outputs that are part of a Page object in the Report
- This setup allows you to see multiple items at once and allows you to configure how the Page looks on export. Note that you still have the ability to attach an output but Hide it from exporting and publishing.
- As a standalone output in the Report (sometimes called a node)
- This setup shows you a single output at a time, and each are exported in a standard way on individual slides or published on individual Pages.
These two structures allow for more flexible workflows where users can organize outputs and supporting items to be seen collectively as part of a Page as well as work with lots of individual outputs without having to worry about page layouts and scrolling around to find items. Better yet, you don't have to stick with just one workflow and each setup can be converted into the other (i.e. you can create a Page containing the final outputs and supporting inputs and then convert the supporting items into nodes afterwards).
This article covers:
- Method - Identifying the structure of an output
- Method - Insert a New Output On the Page
- Method - Insert a New Output Off the Page
- Method - Drag Variables Onto or Off Pages as Tables
- Method - Drag Outputs Onto or Off Pages
- Method - Convert Stand Alone Outputs Into a Page
Requirements
- Any output such as a Table, Calculation, Visualization, or Advanced Analysis output.
Method - Identifying the structure of an output
You can tell what structure the output is by how it is positioned in the tree. Outputs that are a part of a Page will be nested under the page whereas stand alone outputs will not. In the example below you can see an example of Pages circled in orange and how expanding those will show the outputs that are a part of the page. Items circled in blue in the Report tree are standalone outputs and can be inside folders (i.e. US Market and Appendix) or not (i.e. the Custom Calculation).
Outputs that are a part of a Page can be viewed at once and are exported as WYSIWYG:
Stand alone outputs are viewed individually in Edit and View mode and cannot be resized or repositioned in the view:
and exported in a standard way to PowerPoint:
Method - Insert a New Output On the Page
The primary location for adding outputs directly to a Page is via the toolbar:
In this example, we will insert a table.
- Select at least one variable from the Data Sources tree.
- From the toolbar, select the .
Method - Insert a New Output Off the Page
The primary location for adding outputs off a Page is via the Plus menu directly in the Report:
In this example, we will insert a table.
- Select at least one variable from the Data Sources tree.
- Hover over your Report where you would like to insert your table.
- Click Plus
> .
Method - Drag Variables Onto or Off Pages as Tables
Variables can easily be dragged onto a Page or directly onto your Report off a Page using drag and drop.
Drag onto a Page
- Select the Page where you wish to add your variables as tables.
- Select the desired variable(s) in the Data Sources tree.
- Drag the selected item(s) onto your Page.
- The tooltip will tell you what this action will do once you release the dragged item(s).
Drag off a Page
- Select the desired variable(s) in the Data Sources tree.
- Drag the selected item(s) onto your Report where you wish to place your variables as tables.
- The tooltip will tell you what this action will do once you release the dragged item(s).
Method - Drag Outputs Onto or Off Pages
Outputs can easily be dragged onto a Page or directly onto your Report off a Page using drag and drop.
Drag onto a Page
- If the output(s) to be moved are not already on a Page, select the Page where you wish to move them to. Otherwise, you can skip this step.
- Select the desired output(s) in your Report.
- Drag the selected item(s) onto your Page.
- The tooltip will tell you what this action will do once you release the dragged item(s).
Drag off a Page
- Select the desired output(s) in your Report.
- Drag the selected item(s) to where you wish to move them to in your Report.
- The tooltip will tell you what this action will do once you release the dragged output(s).
Method - Convert Stand Alone Outputs Into a New Page
Stand alone outputs can be converted into a new page, allowing you to add additional outputs and tables to the new page.
- Right-click on the stand alone output in your Report.
- Select Convert to New Page(s) > Select your desired page layout.
- OPTIONAL: Give the page a new name.
- OPTIONAL: Drag and drop additional variables from the Data Sources tree to create new tables or crosstabs, or create visualizations, advanced analyses, etc.
