How to Change the Color of Table Cells with Small Sample Sizes

When presenting your data, you may want to highlight data with small sample sizes so viewers know the sample is small. This article describes how to go from a standard table...

...to a table where columns with a sample size under a specified threshold (e.g., 50) are highlighted:

Requirements

• A crosstab created from variables in a data source (using drag and drop).

Method

1. Select your table.
2. In the object inspector, click Data > Rules > Plus (+) > Other Color > Change Color of Cells with Small Sample Sizes.
3. Select the appropriate threshold under Minimum Column n.
4. Select the appropriate color from the color picker.
5. Press OK.

Note:

• This rule uses the Column Sample Size for coloring the cells. A footnote (caption) is also added, which specifies this condition.
• It will also deal with situations where missing data causes the sample size of each column to vary by row.
