Google Forms is a quick way to set up a survey and sendit out for responses. You can import the raw responses from Google Forms a couple of different ways based on whether your responses are linked to a Google Sheet (allows for more automation) or whether they are stored only in Forms (must be imported manually). Do keep in mind that Google Forms can only export files without metadata, which require more data cleaning and checking when using in Displayr.
Requirements
- A Google Form survey with some responses.
Method - Importing from a linked sheet
You can link a Sheet in your Google Drive to the Form. To do so:
- Click on the Link to Sheets from the Responses tab of your Form:
- You can create a new sheet or select an existing one to collect the responses from. The Link to Sheets will now show View in Sheets when the form is linked successfully. Click on View in Sheets to go to the Sheet with the data.
- You can import this Sheet of data by publishing it and importing using a URL. Click on File > Share > Publish to the web.
- You will need to be sure to change the second field from Web page to either Comma-separated values (.csv) or Microsoft Excel (.xlsx):
- Click the green Publish button.
- You will then receive a link that you can use along with How to Import Data via URL to get your data into Displayr. This method also supported automatically updating the data in Displayr with the updated Excel data at a specified frequency.
Method - Downloading data from a Form
If you are fine with manually downloading the data from the form, you can do so by clicking the options button in the top right and Download responses (.csv). You can then import this file into Displayr using My computer, see How to Import Data into Displayr.
Additional notes
In addition to not containing metadata, the data for multiple response questions is stored as semicolon delimited. To be able to parse off the responses, you will need to transform the variable in Displayr, see How to Automatically Categorize Lists of Items.
