How to Set Up and Export a Choice-Based Conjoint Analysis in Qualtrics

This article describes how to take a Choice-Based Conjoint (CBC) experimental design created in Displayr:

And export the design to Qualtrics and automatically create the choice questions:

Requirements

A Choice Based Conjoint experimental design created in Displayr.
A Qualtrics account with appropriate permission to access the necessary API credentials.

Please note these steps require a Displayr license.

Method

You'll need to first get some information from your Qualtrics account, most importantly the API token along with some other information. You can then use that information to create an output in Displayr which will import the design into Qualtrics.

1. Log in to your Qualtrics account.

2. Select the account icon in the top right corner and select Account Settings.

3. From the tabs at the top, select Qualtrics IDs.

4. Copy the Token value listed under API and paste it somewhere for later use.

5. Make note of the Organization ID in the User section as well.

6. Get the Datacenter ID by looking at the URL in the browser: the first part of the URL after the protocol is our Organization ID followed by the Datacenter ID. In the below image, the Datacenter ID is "au1".

7. Open your Displayr document containing your CBC design.

8. From the toolbar menu, select Anything > Advanced Analysis > Choice Modeling > Export Design to Qualtrics.

9. From the object inspector on the right, provide the required inputs:

Choice experimental design output - select the Choice Model design output.
Choice question text - Enter the text to display for the choice questions in the survey.
Qualtrics survey name - enter the name that you want to use for the survey.
Qualtrics API key - enter the API token from Qualtrics.
Qualtrics datacenter ID - enter the Datacenter ID from Qualtrics.
Qualtrics organization ID - the Organization ID from Qualtrics.
URL for existing QSF file - (OPTIONAL) - can be used to add the design to an existing Qualtrics survey. The URL provided should immediately download the QSF file.
- Your URL should not need a password and be made accessible to anyone with the link.
- Your URL should immediately download the file when you paste it into a fresh copy of your web browser, leaving the web page completely blank.

FORMATTING:

Alternative labels - A comma-separated string specifying labels to use for choice alternatives (not including none alternatives). Alternatively can just be the prefix to use for the alternatives, in which case they will be replicated to be unique. For example, specifying 'Choice ' for an experiment with three alternatives will create the labels 'Choice 1', 'Choice 2', 'Choice 3'.
Text for None alternatives - Text specifying the question to ask for the dual-response none question.
None alternative labels - A (possibly comma-separated) string specifying the text/html to use for the none alternative labels (appearing the top row of the table).
Custom style for alternative labels - Optional CSS used to style the alternative labels (i.e. the table column labels).
Custom style for attribute names - Optional CSS used to style the alternative levels (i.e. the table's inner cells).
Custom style for attribute labels - Optional CSS used to style the attribute names (i.e. the table row labels).

SURVEY OPTIONS

Dual response none - If this option is checked, a dual-response none question will be included after each choice question in the questionnaire.
Force responses - If checked, the choice questions must be responded to before the respondent can proceed with the questionnaire.
Don't show constant attributes - If checked, attributes that are constant across alternatives for a particular question will be hidden when that question is displayed in the questionnaire.
Progress bar - If checked, the questionnaire will have a progress bar at the top.

10. Click the Calculate button to export the design.

If all inputs were provided correctly, the output will display the following message:

You can view the survey in your Qualtrics account and verify that the design was imported and the choice model questions were created.

Technical Details

Every time you run the output, Displayr will export the design as a new survey in your Qualtrics account using the name you specify in the Qualtrics survey name field. If you have an existing survey in your account that uses that name, Displayr will add a new survey with that name, rather than merging the two.

If you supply a URL for existing QSF file, Displayr will read the QSF file and merge the Choice Model design into it. Then it will automatically add the combined survey (the design and the survey from the QSF file) to your Qualtrics account as a new survey. This tool does not update the QSF file.
