UPCOMING WEBINAR: Build it once. Use it again: Create reusable charts with AI This article explains the basics of creating tables in Displayr. It describes how to create summary tables, crosstabs, choose statistics, sort, and combine categories.
Summary tables
Summary tables are created by dragging data onto the page.
Crosstabs
Crosstabs are created by dragging data onto the summary analyses. Click here to try this for yourself →You can keep adding data and building up a more detailed table.
Choosing statistics
By default, Displayr chooses the most commonly used statistic to show in the Statistics > Cells on a table (e.g., the %, Column %, and Average). There are two ways to change the statistics that are shown:
- You can restructure the data. For example, if the table is showing percentages and you wish to show averages, then you can change the variable set's Data > Structure > Numeric in the Properties
so it shows averages. This is discussed in Variable Sets.
- If you want to add or remove statistics (such as Sample Size or Count), you can change what is shown in the Properties
Sort
Sort categories on a table by right-clicking on the column you wish to sort, and choosing how you wish to sort (e.g., Descending). This change will change the underlying data (e.g., all current and future tables that use this data).
You can also sort by clicking and dragging on the symbol that appears in row and column categories. When doing this, take note of where you release the category, as it can be either moved or combined with another category.
Combine Categories
You can combine categories by dragging and dropping and by selecting multiple categories, right-clicking, and choosing Combine. This change will change the underlying data (e.g., all current and future tables that use this data). If you decide later on that you'd like to split it back apart, right-click and choose Split or Reset > Table Categories.
Creating additional combined categories
An alternative to combining categories is to create a new combined category. For example, you may want to create a category called 18 to 34 in addition to 18 to 24, 25 to 29, and 25 to 34. This is done by selecting the categories, right-clicking, and selecting Create NET.
Rename categories
Right-click on the category of a table and select Rename to change how it appears. This change will update the underlying data (e.g., all current and future tables that use this data).
Automatically perform statistical significance testing
Statistical testing is built into summary tables and crosstabs automatically - calling your attention to important insights using arrows and font colors. These results indicate whether the value in the cell is significantly higher or lower than expected compared to the other respondents. If more customization is needed, see How to Apply Significance Testing in Displayr for how to set the default stat testing applied to all tables that haven't been modified individually, and also for selected tables in your Report. This can be done on any number of tables you have selected, and if you select a Page(s) or Folder(s) in the Report tree, all tables contained within those.
Rules
Additional modifications can be made to the content and formatting of tables by applying table Rules found in the Properties under Data > Rules > +. Some common uses for these are for hiding empty rows and columns, sorting rows based on a particular column in the table that only affects the table (unlike using Sort above), and cell shading based on sample size or values. Our article on How to Use Rules in Displayr goes into more detail on how these can be applied to tables in your document. This can be done on any number of tables you have selected, and if you select a Page(s) or Folder(s) in the Report tree, all tables contained within those.
Creating in bulk
There are many features that enable you to create many tables at once across variable sets in your data. This is helpful in the data cleaning process and initial investigation into finding insights in your data. You can view all of these via the toolbar by clicking Table > Report or by clicking + in the Report tree and navigating to the Report menu there. The most common automations include:
- Summary Tables of individual variable sets using , see How to Create Summary Tables.
- Crosstabs, see How to Create Lots of Crosstabs.
- Banner Tables, see How to Create Lots of Banner Tables.
Editing in bulk
You can edit fields on the Data tab for multiple tables at once if needed, including the Rows, Columns, Filters, Weight, Statistics, and Rules. This can be done on any number of tables you have selected, and if you select a Page(s) or Folder(s) in the Report tree, all tables contained within those will be selected. Just select what you want to change, and an Properties will pop up with these blank fields that you can set for your selection.
