This article describes how to go from displaying individual categories and percentages for a categorical variable set:
To display an average for each variable:
Requirements
- Familiarity with the Structure and Value Attributes of Variable Sets.
- A categorical (Nominal or Ordinal) variable set that contains meaningful underlying numeric values. For example, a 1-5 scale question for multiple brands.
Method - Automatically Restructure
- Select the variable set in the Data Sources tree.
- OPTIONAL: If you want to keep the original variable set intact, you can create a duplicate copy of the variable first by right-clicking and selecting Duplicate.

For Nominal - Multi: Grid or Ordinal - Multi: Grid variables:
From the object inspector, click Data > Modify Variable Set > Restructure > Averages Grid.
For Nominal or Ordinal variables:
From the object inspector, click Data > Modify Variable Set > Restructure > Averages.
Method - Manually Restructure
- Select the variable set in the Data Sources tree.
- OPTIONAL: If you want to keep the original variable set intact, you can create a duplicate copy of the variable first by right-clicking and selecting Duplicate.
- In the object inspector
, go to Data > Properties > Structure > to the appropriate Numeric structure per Variable Sets.
