How to Set Up Side By Side Questions from Qualtrics in Displayr

This article deals with how to set up Qualtrics' Side by Side question (formerly known as gap analysis question) in Displayr when imported from an SPSS file. In Qualtrics, the Side by Side question style allows the survey author to present two or more grid-style questions beside one another. These could be any combination of single-response grid (called a Nominal - Multi in Displayr) or multiple-response grid (called a Binary - Grid in Displayr). Displayr does not have an equivalent Structure that combines these, and the different elements of such questions must be analyzed separately. The way such data is stored in the Qualtrics SPSS export means that Displayr cannot detect and separate the different questions automatically. Such Side by Side questions will appear as a series of individual Nominal variables when the data is imported into Displayr, and so some additional set-up is therefore necessary.

Method

The variables will appear in the Data Sources tree with the variables for the first question above the variables for the second question. These sets of variables should be combined as a pair of questions. In the above example, the structures for the two questions are Nominal - Multi and one Binary - Grid, but other combinations are also possible. For each set of variables:

Go to the Data Sources tree, and highlight all the variables for the set.
Right-click and select Combine, and in the object inspector , set the Data > Structure to Nominal - Multi (if the Qualtrics question permitted a single response per row) or Binary - Grid (if the Qualtrics question permitted multiple responses per row).
