How to Back Code Into a Binary - Grid Variable Set

When a Binary - Grid variable set has open-ended responses, there will be one Text variable for each part of the grid. For example, a brand image question may have a Text variable for each brand, where the respondents have provided additional images for each. The open-ended responses can be combined with the main data from the question using Back Coding.

Requirements

The open-ended responses can be combined with the main data from the question using Back Coding. The process requires two things:

• The Binary - Grid variable set is first split up into a set of Binary - Multi variable sets, with one variable set corresponding to each of the Text variables containing the open-ended responses. In the brand image example, this would mean one Binary - Multi variable set for each brand.
• The open-ended responses are separated Text questions and NOT combined into a Text - Multi.

Method

Starting with a Binary - Grid variable set, the steps are as follows:

1. Make a copy of the variables from the grid by highlighting the variables in the Data Sources tree, right-clicking, and selecting Duplicate.
2. Make a new Binary - Multi variable set for the variables corresponding to each of the open-ended response variables by selecting those variables, right-click > Combine.
3. In Properties , the Data > Attributes > Structure should be set to Binary - Multi.
4. Make sure that the variable labels from the new Binary - Multi variable sets are identical.
5. Select the text variables for the open-ended responses in the Data Sources tree and click + > Text Categorization.
6. Select Multiple themes
7. Click Start.
8. Select Inputs and Back Coding.
9. For each row, select the appropriate question in the Corresponding back-coding variables section and click OK.
