At the top of the object inspector for any calculation is a checkbox called Calculate automatically. When unchecked, the calculation ceases to be updated. If a calculation is very slow (e.g., Hierarchical Bayes calculation), this can prevent the document from being slowed down by the calculation being automatically re-run when any of its dependencies change.
