How to Suggest Better Variable Names from Source Labels

This article describes how to improve the names of variables in the project by searching through the text of the original labels in the data file. In some cases, the names for multiple response questions supplied in the data file contain less information than the label text, and this script can find and replace that information for you. If the extra text is still showing in the labels, then this script will also tidy it up. Note that you can also perform a similar step in the Data Preparation Agent.

Requirements

• A Displayr document with a data set.
• At least one page or output in the Report tree.

Method

1. If your project contains multiple data sets, select the data set that contains variable names that could be improved.
2. Go to Anything > Data > Miscellaneous > Suggest Better Variable Set Names from Source Labels.
3. If available, Displayr will suggest a better variable name. If you agree with it, click OK, and the variable name will be updated in the Data Sources tree.

If the suggested names are not meaningful, then it is likely that the labels in the file do not contain better information for naming the questions.
