In order to analyze the results of Alchemer MaxDiff analysis, you will need to first convert the data file.
This article describes how to convert a MaxDiff data file provided by Alchemer (formerly known as Survey Gizmo) and add the responses to the main survey data set in a format suitable for analysis in Displayr.
Requirements
- An Excel Alchemer MaxDiff data file containing the following variables: Response ID, Combination, your Attribute variables with the shown attribute, and the Best and Worst selection variables.
- Survey data set with a Response ID variable matching the MaxDiff data file.
- If you don't have a survey data set, but still want to do the MaxDiff analysis: you can create a dummy dataset with one variable named Response ID for the unique response id numbers from the MaxDiff data. This is most easily done in Excel:

Please note these steps require a Displayr license.
Method
- Import the survey data set into Displayr. See How to Import Data into Displayr.
- Import the Alchemer MaxDiff Data into Displayr (e.g., Max Diff Output.xlsx).
- In the Data Sources tree select the MaxDiff data set.
- In the Anything menu go to Advanced Analytics > MaxDiff > Convert Alchemer (Survey Gizmo) MaxDiff Data for Analysis.
- Select OK. You will now get the following message:
This means you will have new best/worst MaxDiff variables and a MaxDiff version variable created in your survey data data set:
And there will be a new page added that contains the MaxDiff Experimental Design information in a table:
-
If there is more than one other data set containing Response ID then the respondent data set must also be selected.
- Use the outputs in step 5 as the inputs in the steps in either How to Use Hierarchical Bayes for MaxDiff or How to Do MaxDiff Latent Class Analysis.
- EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN > Design source > Use an existing table and Design is the table output on the new page.
- RESPONDENT DATA > Version > Version from ________.csv varaibles and Best/Worst selections >Choices from _________.csv
