How to Recode a Variable Using Category Midpoints

This article describes how to recode a categorical variable in which the value attributes are coded with standard numeric coding (i.e., 1, 2, 3, etc.):

Requirements

• A categorical variable labeled with numeric ranges which represent each category (i.e. 18 to 24, or 25-29), but which is coded with standard numeric codes/values (i.e., 1, 2, 3, etc.). 

Method

1. Select the categorical variable in the Data Sets tree. 

2. From the toolbar, select Anything > Data > Variables > Modify > Recode > Recode Variable(s) Using Code/Category Midpoints. 

3. Click the Values button from the object inspector to review and confirm the assigned recoded values.
