How to Create Top Two Category Variable(s) (Top 2 Boxes)

This article describes how to you can create new variables that show the proportion of respondents who selected the top 2 options in Nominal, Nominal - Multi, Ordinal or Ordinal - Multi variable sets, in other words, Displayr computes what is commonly referred to as 'Top 2 Box' percentages. 

The table on the left shows a Summary table of a Nominal - Multi question. The table on the right shows a Summary of the Binary - Multi. 

Requirements

• A data set loaded into Displayr that contains Nominal, Nominal - Multi, Ordinal or Ordinal - Multi variable sets.

Method

1. Displayr identifies the bottom options by looking at the numeric Value for each category that is not selected as Missing Data in the Value Attributes, of the variable set, and choosing the lowest. 
2. OPTIONAL: To find out what the numeric values are, select the variable set in the Data Set tree.
3. OPTIONAL: Then in the object inspector on the right of your screen, under Properties > DATA VALUES click on Select categories. 
   
4. To create a 'Top 2 Box' variable select the variable set in the Data Sets tree.
5. Either hover over any variable in your Data Sets tree > Plus (+) > Insert Variable(s) > Ready-Made New Variable(s) > Top Two Category Variable(s) (Top 2 Boxes) or else from the toolbar menu, select Anything > Data > Variables > New > Ready-Made New Variable(s) > Top Two Category Variable(s) (Top 2 Boxes).
6. Displayr will ask you if you want to consider variable sets whose categories suggest that they may be scale variable sets (for example, 5-point agreement scales).
7. Then, it will ask you to select which variable sets to generate new variables for, if you haven't already selected a variable in the Data Sets tree.
8. You will then be asked if you want to remove categories that look like Don't know options. This is equivalent to setting the category as Missing Data.
9. Displayr will then create new variables for the top 2 categories of each selected variable set. The Value Attributes may look something similar to below:
