How to Hide Empty Rows and Columns in a Table or Visualization

Sometimes you may have rows and/or columns in your table or visualization that show as missing data (NaN), 0%, or 0. This could be due to filtering or because a survey question was only asked of a subset of respondents. In these cases, you may want to tidy your table/visualization and hide these empty rows and/or columns. This article describes how to go from a table or visualization with entire rows and/or columns of 0% or missing data...

..to a table/visualization where these empty rows and columns are removed:

Requirements

• A table or visualization where the primary statistic for the table is always 0% or NaN in a given row or column. The primary statistic is the first statistic under Object Inspector > Data > Statistics > Cells menu.

Note: You must apply the rule directly to the input table if you see a table icon in the Data > Data Source > Data field in the Properties of a visualization.

You will also see a warning in the Rules section of Properties if you have applied a rule directly to a non-compatible visualization, and you will need to apply it to the input table instead. For example:

Method

1. Select your table or visualization.
2. Go to Data > Rules in the object inspector .
3. Click Plus (+) > Rows/Columns > Hide Empty Rows and Columns, Hide Empty Rows, or Hide Empty Columns.
4. Click OK.

A note is added to the footer (caption) when any rows or columns have been removed.
