Introduction
This article describes how to refine categorization or text coding:
By either creating grouped subcategories:
Or adding, removing, and moving text responses between categories:
Requirements
You will need a categorized variable (set) that was created during the manual or semi-automatic categorization of unstructured text. These variables will have "categorized" in their name:
Method
Option 1 - Split existing categories into subcategories
- Select the already categorized variable in the Data Sets tree.
- From the object inspector, go to Properties > DATA VALUES > Edit Categorization.
- Select the category you would like to split from the existing list of categories on the right side of the screen.
- Right-click on the category, and select Add subcategory.
- Enter a name for the new subcategory and click OK.
- Repeat Steps 4-5 for any additional subcategories.
Option 2 - Move text responses between categories
- On the left side of the screen, update the Show responses from: drop-down to one of the categories from which you are splitting responses into another (sub)category. In this example, I am splitting the Price/Low price category into: Low price, Discounts, and Other price.
- Select the response(s) that you would like to move to a different category and then select the existing category on the right side, and click Move to.
- Once you have moved the desired responses, click on Save Categories.
Option 3 - Add text responses to categories
- On the left side of the screen, update the Show responses from: drop-down to UNCATEGORIZED.
- Select the response(s) that you would like to assign to an existing category from the left side of the screen, then select the category you would like to assign it to on the right side of the screen, and click Categorize As.
- Once you have added the desired responses, click on Save Categories.
Option 4 - Remove text responses from categories
- On the left side of the screen, update the Show responses from: drop-down to (all responses).
- Select the response(s) that you would like to remove from an existing category from the left side of the screen, then select the category you would like to remove it from on the right side of the screen, and click Remove From.
- Once you have removed the desired responses from the category, click on Save Categories.
