Requirements
You will need a categorized variable set that was created using the text categorization tool. See How to Classify Text Data for instructions. These variables will have "categorized" in their name.
Method - Create subthemes
Option 1 - Split themes into subthemes
- Select the categorized variable in Data Sources.
- From the object inspector, go to Data > Properties > Edit Categorization.
- Right-click an existing theme and select Add Subtheme.
- Give the subtheme a name and hit Enter.
- OPTIONAL: Right-click any other subthemes that are part of the group and Rename.
- From the Theme filter
, select the original theme (this will be the one that currently contains responses from the original theme).
- Drag the text response into the appropriate subtheme, or hover and click the assigned triple-letter tile and select the subtheme.
- OPTIONAL: To remove from a theme, click the triple letter tile and then click the X to the right of the triple letters.
- Repeat Steps 3-8 as needed.
- Click Save when you are done making changes.
Option 2 - Create a new theme and move existing themes into it as subthemes
- Select the categorized variable in Data Sources.
- From the object inspector, go to Data > Properties > Edit Categorization.
- In the Themes pane, click + Add New Theme.
- Enter a name for the new theme and hit Enter.
- Select an existing theme that you want to move into the theme created in Step 4.
- Drag and drop the theme into your "parent" theme to create a subtheme.
- Repeat Steps 5-6 for any additional subthemes.
- Click Save when you are done making changes.
Method - Modify text responses assigned to themes
These options allow you to refine and tidy responses included in a theme.
Option 1 - Move responses between themes
- Select the categorized variable in Data Sources.
- From the object inspector, go to Data > Properties > Edit Categorization.
- Update the Theme filter
to the theme from which you want to refine responses.
- Select the response(s) that you would like to move to a different theme.
- Drag the response(s) into the different theme, or hover and click the existing triple-letter tile(s) and select the different theme.
- If you selected Only one theme when creating the categorized variable, the selected response will automatically be moved to the newly selected theme.
- If you are working with a categorized variable that was created using Multiple themes, deselect the original theme it was assigned to.
- OPTIONAL: To remove the response from an assigned theme, click the triple-letter tile and then click the X to remove the response.
- Repeat Steps 3-6 as needed.
- Once you have moved the desired responses, click on Save.
Option 2- Add responses to additional themes
Note that this option is only available if you selected Multiple themes when creating the categorized variable.
- Select the categorized variable in Data Sources.
- From the object inspector, go to Data > Properties > Edit Categorization.
- Update the Theme filter
to a specific theme, or remove the existing theme filter.
- Select a text response that you want to add to another theme.
- Drag and drop it into the new theme on the left, or click the assigned triple-letter tile and select the new theme.
- Repeat Steps 4-5 as needed.
- Once you are finished, click Save.
Option 3 - Remove responses from themes
While going through your quality checks on the classified data, you might find that some responses don't fit well into a selected theme. This option is only available if you selected Multiple themes when creating your categorized variable. If you selected Only one theme, then follow the steps in the Move responses between themes section above.
To remove a response from a theme:
- Select the categorized variable in Data Sources.
- From the object inspector, go to Data > Properties > Edit Categorization.
- Select a classified response (it will have a colored triple-letter tile to the left of the text).
- Click the triple-letter tile and then click the X to the right of the triple-letter tile.
- OPTIONAL: Update the Theme filter
to "Unclassified" to review any responses that are no longer assigned to a theme.
- OPTIONAL: Classify the unclassified responses to the appropriate theme by dragging and dropping into the theme, or hovering and clicking Manually classify and selecting the theme. Just make sure it doesn't go back into the theme you just removed it from!
- Repeat Steps 3-6 as needed.
- Click Save when you are finished.
